Staff

There are many ways to get involved in helping nature through volunteering. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if're interested in becoming a part of the Blue Heron team and supporting our mission.

Jason Meekhof, Executive Director

Jason brings extensive experience in conservation and nonprofit management to Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy. Before joining our team, he spent nearly a decade at the National Deer Association and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, where he held roles ranging from Regional Director to positions in development and fundraising. His work included advocacy for public lands across the Great Lakes region and nationally, underscoring the critical importance of protecting land, water, and wildlife.

Jason's commitment to conservation in Southeast Michigan stems from his deep understanding of the vital connection between nature and community well-being. His diverse background also includes running a high-end mixed media furniture company. Jason holds a BFA in Metalsmithing from Wayne State University and a Nonprofit Management Certificate from Oakland University.

Jason currently resides in Webster Township with his wife, Jennifer, and their child, Lydia. Having grown up in Northern Michigan and having lived in Southfield for 25 years, he appreciates firsthand the value of greenspace and accessible nature for community residents.

Anastasia Alexandrova, GIS Specialist & Events

Anastasia first became involved with BHHC in 2020 as an outdoor volunteer and student intern. During this time she used her background in stormwater and wastewater management research to assist in designing a woodland swale on one of BHHC's preserves. In Summer of 2021, she graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Earth & Environment Science and a minor in Climate, Space, and Engineering (CLaSP). During this time she also began an internship project where she utilized her interest in spatial data by creating watershed and property maps for BHHC using ArcGIS.

Hired as the Events Coordinator for BHHC in early 2022, Anastasia oversees various event planning, management, and communication for the organization. Connect with her at anastasia@blueheronheadwaters.org.

Dana Campbell, Graphic Design & Marketing

Dana has a diverse background in instructional design, project management, and website design. After graduating from California State University Chico, she worked for a startup in Boulder Colorado, as a designer as well as leading teams in software research  and development. Later, she moved to Michigan, where she continued her work as a web and instructional designer for non-profit organizations.

Dana's passion for nature led her to invest in the mission of Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy, where she serves as the lead for marketing and graphical elements, designing the website, interpretive signage, property signs, and other online communication and tech support. She currently lives on a property with a BHHC protected easement, demonstrating her commitment to protecting nature.

Mary Herzenstiel, CRM Specialist

Mary was born and raised in northern Oakland County and currently lives there with her husband, Frank, and two sons.  She is a graduate of Oakland University and Marygrove College.  After working in the marketing and international business fields, she became a high school teacher.  Sharing the love of the outdoors with her husband and children drew her to learning more about conservation.  Living on a lake in Springfield Township, Mary became interested in invasive species and the balance of ecosystems.  Working on an organic CSA farm in Davisburg, she learned more about edible weeds such as purslane.  Currently, she maintains the BHHC database and enjoys being a guest teacher and volunteer in the local schools.
